The paper studies the genesis of the ideological and theoretical views of R. Pound, one of the leading representatives of American legal thought. His work had a huge impact on the development of jurisprudence not only in the United States of America, but also abroad. At the same time, many aspects of his theory remain poorly studied. In the paper, the views of the American lawyer correlate with the ideas and concepts of his predecessors and contemporaries. Considerable attention is paid to the analysis of the concept of “the end of law”. It is concluded that the origins of R. Pound’s teaching are associated with the peculiarities of the genesis of legal science in the United States, with the specifics of the formation of his professional views, as well as with European sociologically oriented concepts of law.
