The article deals with the analysis of place-names in the regional variation of the language. In the focus of the author's attention are: factors that determine the system of toponymic lexicon of Volgograd region; linguistic and extra-linguistic causes that govern formation and usage of geographical names in mass media; objective basis for setting up a microtoponymic subsystem.
