The approaches to ensuring the international competitiveness of small and medium-sized businesses are considered. It was found out that an important component of the strategy for ensuring the competitiveness of any country is a policy aimed at increasing the level of social protection of citizens, their social development, and improving the welfare of the nation. Solving these tasks will ensure real conditions for economic growth of the population, improve the priority development of various forms of business enterprises, which in turn will contribute to the expansion of the domestic market, the growth of entrepreneurial activity on the part of the population, and the creation of a favorable business environment. At the same time, institutional transformations in transformational conditions have systemic specifics, since they are aimed, in particular, at determining the quantitative change in the share of enterprises of non-state ownership in the production of goods and services and in the volume of fixed production assets (with the allocation of small and medium-sized enterprises), at improving production efficiency indicators by ownership forms. It is established that the actualization of institutionalism as a theory and as a practice in the world economy is due to the need to overcome the non-historical and mechanistic interpretation of management, the desire to better understand the latent and social mechanisms of economic dynamics in modern conditions.
