This paper dwells upon combined power systems operated at high-capacity wastewater treatment facilities. Given that such systems are in place mainly to supply power to turbo blowers, pumps, mixers, and gate valves, some of which constitute critical loads, they require a tertiary power source in place, e.g. a small power plant. When designing and adopting such units for use at wastewater treatment facilities, engineers need to choose the appropriate voltage rating, to calculate the static and dynamic stability of the power plant, and to ensure that the power system and the onsite generation facilities function reliably whether in parallel or in islanded operation, especially in cases where western solutions have been implemented with some assumptions. The paper also presents stability estimates for such systems, defines the critical external power outage durations, and proposes solutions for more reliable power plant operation.
