The art image of the railway as the embodiment of the ideas of technicism and antitechnicism (the XIX - early XX centuries)

The study analyzes the art image of the railway as the embodiment of the ideas of technicism and antitechnicism. The use of a combination of philosophical, cultural and art history methods, as well as works of fine and expressive arts as empirical material, allowed a conclusion to be drawn about the special aspects of the art interpretation of the railway as a technical object. The rapid development of technology in the XIX-XX centuries and its active impact on the sociocultural space caused a detailed scientific discussion about the importance of technology in the life of man and society and about its influence on culture. As a result, two research positions appeared - technicism and antitechnicism, which representatives proposed opposite assessments of technology and technical development. The study of the image of the railway from the point of view of these positions showed that both estimates - positive and negative - found their expression in art culture. This made it possible to conclude about the bipolarity of the image of the railway embodied in a wide range of works of art.
