A complex analysis of existing notions of the city has made it possible to choose the basic properties and distinctive features of urbanized territories, which characterize the city as a many-sided and integrated research object. It is considered the general and distinctive features characteristic of cities, average and small towns, allowing to preliminary estimate their social, economic and ecological situation.
