Modernization of higher engineering education in Russia is primarily aimed at improved alignment of organization, coordination and content of engineering training with recent global trends. Foreign language skills appear of crucial importance for reaching this ambitious goal. At the same time, most Russian engineering universities demonstrate low quality of teaching foreign languages, which does not allow for quick hits in the struggle for a reputation of a country of stable economy, as well as for successful import substitution projects. The need to identify barriers towards high-quality foreign language courses at a university level motivated the authors to carry out industry and alumni assessment of language training in order to analyze their efficiency and propose solutions.
