Assessment of cognitive impairment in patients with epilepsy

Epilepsy is a chronic brain disease characterized by a persistent predisposition to epileptic seizures as a result of pathological, excessive activity of synchronized vast populations of brain neurons, leading to neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social consequences of this condition. The purpose of the study : to analyze and evaluate cognitive impairment among patients with various forms of epilepsy. Materials and methods : 100 patients with epilepsy were examined. Cognitive impairment was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale. The results of the study: 47% of patients had mild cognitive disorders, 24% had a moderate decrease in intelligence and memory, executive functions, 29% had severe cognitive-mnestic deviations with statistically significant changes in all areas of cognitive functions. In conclusion, the authors conclude that it is necessary to increase the effectiveness of treatment and rehabilitation measures in relation to this category of patients.
