Assessment of Russia’s national potential based on international ratings

Economic and political influence on the world community can be exerted by a country with a sufficiently powerful national potential, which is determined through quantitative characteristics of the available set of resources, both tangible and intangible. National potential includes natural resource, production, investment, financial, human, managerial, innovative, institutional, and foreign economic potentials. During the formation of a multipolar world and the instability of foreign policy, the issues of strengthening the national economy, preserving the sovereignty and security of the country are important. As a result, the assessment of the national potential of the economy becomes an urgent problem and takes on new outlines. The purpose of this study is to assess the national potential of Russia in comparison with other countries based on international ratings. As a research methodology, rating methods were considered, which are based on a system of statistical processing methods, including modeling, normalization, weighing, aggregation of indicators, ranking, and time series construction. Based on world rankings, Russia’s national potential has been assessed, it has been proved that it is among the 10 largest economies in the world in terms of a number of indicators, but at the same time there are problems of population, sustainable development, the formation of an institutional environment for the development of innovative and entrepreneurial activities, and the development of human capital. The article presents some directions for solving the identified problems. The results of the study can be useful to government authorities, as well as business structures for choosing management decisions in the field of developing the national potential of the country and individual businesses.
