Estimation of prospects for poverty reduction in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)

The subject of the study is poverty as a social and economic phenomenon. The purpose of the study is to estimate the prospects for reducing poverty and achieving national development goals by 2024 in the largest subject of the Russian Federation - the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), which is characterized by high rates of poverty. The author thoroughly examines the structure, dynamics, and risks of poverty in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), provides the results of a comparative analysis of poverty indicators of the region and the relevant values for the Far Eastern Federal District. As a result, poverty factors are identified. They are unemployment and economic inequality of the rural population with a high demographic load on working age youth. Research method: analysis, comparison, systematization, tabular interpretation, generalization, and grouping of data to formulate conclusions based on the results of the study. The novelty of the research is identification of specific characteristics of poverty in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), in particular: the high risk of child poverty and of rural poverty, a significant increase in poverty risk among the unemployed population, estimation of the possibility to reduce poverty in the region twice by 2024 via such measures as the promotion of economic growth, rising the real income, improving the targeting of social support. The author concludes that it is unlikely that there will be a significant reduction in poverty in the region in a short time.
