The main purpose of this study is to assess the balance between the economic feasibility of the intensity of the use of forest resources and their preservation in modern economic conditions to ensure economic activity in the development of the natural resource potential of the region. On the basis of official statistical information, we carried out a comparative analysis of the state of forest management in the constituent entities of the Federation of the eastern federal districts for the period 1990-2018. In the course of the study, we assessed the current situation in the field of the economic and ecological state of forest use of resource territories, and also determined the role and influence on the current situation in forest use of such factors as timber harvesting, fires, the size of reforestation, which caused a different degree of impact on the reproduction of forest potential. As a result of the study, we identified trends and factors that determine the violation of the balance of forest management and have an impact on its state and dynamics, highlighting the most significant among them. We have carried out a classification of the constituent entities of the Federation by forest-growing groups, which allows them to be differentiated based on natural and climatic conditions, relief features and geographic location. As a result of the correlation analysis, we have established the relationships between the factors and parameters of forest use, which make it possible to assess the sustainability of these relationships.
