The greater economic activity in the Arctic, the greater Arctic sea ports turnover and carriage volume along the Northern Sea Route. The aim of the work is to study carriage and traffic capacity of transport routes of the European and Ural North of Russia. At the same time, the Arctic transport system includes the Northern Sea Route, land, air and river routes to the Arctic sea ports, as well as coastal infrastructure, ensuring their functioning. The main cargo turnover in the European and Ural North of Russia is provided by sea ports of Murmansk, Kandalaksha, Arkhangelsk, Naryan-Mar, Varandey, and Sabetta. The authors analyze cargo turnover of keyports in the European and Ural North of Russia and traffic volume on the Northern Sea Route in comparison with total turnover of Russian sea ports. They draw up a scheme of transport approaches to the main ports according to transport modes. The article assesses compliance of carriage and traffic capacity of transport routes of the European and Ural North of Russia with needs of the Arctic transport system. It gives characteristics of key sea ports of the European and Ural North of Russia, their capacities and capabilities to increase cargo turnover volume. The work determines prospects to boost cargo flows of the Arctic transport system. In order to reach targets for traffic volume on the Northern Sea Route, as set out in the strategic planning documents, it is necessary to attract new cargo flows, including: bring industrial goods to the Arctic from the Urals and other regions. This will require additional research and investment in the development of transport routes of the European and Ural North.
