The article is a description of the German Benedictine monk Odo Casel’s teaching on the mysteries. which appeared in 1920’s-1930’s. Te author traces the significant influence of Casel’s Mysteriengegenwart on the Roman Catholic teaching on the nature and effects of the sacraments in the second half of the 20th century, particularly on the text of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council. Casel had a rather unusual approach to the issue of the presence of Christ in the liturgical rite, which was not inherent in scholasticism and which seems to be a restoration of the traditional understanding of the liturgical celebration and the notion of “mystery”. Te article is part of broader research on the Liturgical Movement in Germany
