The innovative lag in the commercialization of innovative developments in the field of hybrid materials: on the example of metal-organic frameworks

In recent decades, the field of hybrid materials has gone from being exclusively fundamental to more applied, and many developments show measurable results with the prospect of application in industry. However, despite the active financing, the market for such innovative materials is not stable, despite the extensive capabilities and properties of such products. The percentage of technical solutions that were created as a result of university research projects and which were subsequently commercialized is extremely small. Moreover, in those projects that were eventually commercialized, there is no common path, clear regulations or business process that would allow scaling up this practice, despite the fact that the total period of development of this industry is 40 years, and its applied vector has been implemented in the last 20 years. In this paper, an attempt is made to identify the innovation lag inherent in innovative developments in the field of hybrid materials in order to identify the stages of the commercialization process that can lead to an intensification of its implementation.
