In many areas of applied physics, such as underwater acoustics, radar, climatology, and shipbuilding, when studying sea waves, it is necessary to know not only the frequency spectrum but also the lengths and directions of wave propagation. The dependence of the spectral density of the surface wind wave elevation power on the frequency and wave vector can be estimated by the method described in the paper. The method is distinguished by the simplicity of the equipment; it is enough to shoot the waves with one video camera and process the recording using a PC (a link to the author's open-source program is given). The possibilities are further expanded by combining a camera and a calibration device — a wave recorder or a spar buoy for measuring water surface oscillations at a point — into a scientific installation. The paper provides recommendations on the conditions for using the video recording method and provides examples of processing.
