Optimizing JPEG2000 image compression algorithm for space-based scanning-type observation systems

The paper describes the JPEG2000 DWT image compression algorithm based on JPEG2000 algorithm and optimized for implementation in onboard compression hardware of space observation systems. As compared with the JPEG2000 algorithm, it has a different wavelet transform and the method of controlling the compression ratio. The compression ratio control method is geared towards compressing a sequence of weakly correlated images, which is applicable to scanning type observation systems. The paper provides comparison test data between a hardware implementation of the JPEG2000 DWT algorithm and software-based implementations using a software/hardware complex for compression algorithms testing. The compression module with the JPEG2000 DWT algorithm has the bandwidth of up to 110 Mpixel/s and permits to design on its basis the onboard compression equipment with a total throughput of more than 5 Gbps. To evaluate the effect of the algorithm JPEG2000 DWT on the mission performance of space observation systems, a method is proposed for estimating the loss of linear ground resolution when using lossy compression.
