The author analyses the evolution of main indicators used in international practice to assess life standards among populations of different countries and compare these countries. Major emphasis is put on the indicators within the concept of human potential growth and sustainable growth concept which are seen as the most progressive under modern conditions. In conclusion, the author surveyed essential deficiencies in this area.
