Local air defense in the Far East of the USSR in 1932-1939

The paper deals with the process of mustering local air defense in the Far East of the USSR in 1932-1939. It was held in the context of the unstable geopolitical situation in the Asia-Pacific region and political repressions in the 1930s. The author analyzes the activities of state and party bodies, the local air defense units, Osoaviakhim (Society for the Promotion of Aviation and Chemical Defense), the Red Cross Society and other departments for training the population, enterprises and transport facilities for anti-air and chemical defense. Based on the specific case studies, the research shows the interaction between the authorities and the local air defense units during the air defense activities: warning the population, blackout of buildings, enterprises and facilities, the construction of defensive structures, population training, exercises. The author concluded that, in the 1930s, the system of the local air defense of the Far East was in the process of being established. The research is based on the documents of the Russian State Military Archive and the State Archives of the Khabarovsk Territory.
