Basic conceptions of the ancient Mordva ethnogenesis (historiographical review)

The history of studies in the ethnogenesis of ancient Mordva is analyzed in the article. Researchers developed two basic conceptions - migratory and autochthonic. According to the first conception the main role in the ethnogenesis of Mordvins was played by kindred population of the Kama region, according to the second conception - by a local tribe of the Gorodetskaya culture.
