This article reviews the publications of the central and local periodicals, which reflect the development of Sakhalin local history in 1920 - 1930-s as a part of the Soviet regional ethnography. The authors identify the main thematic blocks of the local history data, showing the evolution of the interest of the Soviet state and society to the various areas of the Sakhalin local history (geographical, historical and cultural). Particular attention is paid to the study of the religious situation in Sakhalin in the context of historical and cultural areas of the local history.
