The paper analyzes the issues of Armenian studies development in the Russian Empire in the 19th century. The authors noted that the political and economic circumstances required an immediate research of the Transcaucasian region. The issues devoted to Armenian history were not the subjects of systematic investigation in the early 19th century. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the leading topics of the study of Russian historiography were the problems of Western Armenians and the Armenian question. The paper shows the contribution of Armenian and Russian experts in Caucasian studies and Armenological historians such as M. Khorensky, S. Glinka, P. Butkov, N. Dubrovin, V. Potto, N. Emin, K. Patkanov, and G. Ezov. These researchers have created the scientific schools. On the one hand, the increasing interest in the culture of the Armenian people and the history of Armenia was explained by the deepening Armenian-Russian relations. On the other hand, it was important to study the Armenian regions annexed to Russia.
