The cultural construct of the "Other / Alien" completely differently functions in traditional and technogenic civilizations, and there are various models of intercultural contacts in them. In Western culture, traditional societies are considered to be closed and non-contact, and Western ones are open to everything new. However, cultural analysis shows the problematic nature of this formulation of the question. Local traditional societies had their own mechanisms of peaceful discovery to other cultures, whereas modern societies often demonstrated intolerance and xenophobia that were not inferior to primitive ethnocentrism. The myth of the closure of traditional cultures was an important part of the ideology of colonialism. In the age of the identity crisis, it is important to address the experience of traditional societies in overcoming xenophobia.
