The energy infrastructure in the regions needs to be modernized on a large scale, therefore the development of small distribution energy (SDE) is one of the ways to develop both the electric and heat energy sectors in Russia. The article discusses the development trends of SDE. The author analyzes the structure and trends of the electric power industry in Russia. The following prerequisites were identified for increasing the share of SDE in the total electricity generation in Russia for 2020: a decrease in the rate of growth in energy consumption, the need for urgent and mass modernization and reconstruction of district boiler and heating networks, the transition to gas oil, an increase in the cost of electricity transmission and the development of technologies. The author analyzed the electric power complex of the North-West Federal District and the prospects for the development of SDE based on renewable and fossil energy sources. It was noted that the creation of SDE facilities is necessary for the development of hard-to-reach regions. In conclusion, the author emphasizes that there is great potential in the NWFD for the creation and modernization of existing generating facilities for small energy. Various types of fossil fuels can be used as fuel for SDE facilities in the region.
