Resume: Heart disease in children is in most cases congenital. This is the most common group of structural disorders in infants, united on one basis. • Eight infants out of 1000 live births have severe cardiac malformations. • Some abnormalities of the cardiovascular system, such as aortic bicuspid valve, occur in 1-2% of live newborns. • About 1 in 10 stillborn babies have a malformation of the heart. The nine most common cardiac abnormalities account for 80% of all lesions, however: • About 10-15% of infants have complex defects with more than one malformation of the heart; • about 10-15% of babies also have non-cardiac abnormalities.
