Investigation results of motivation of young Russian football players of different age are discussed in the article. Self determination theory as one of the most influential contemporary motivation theories is used as theoretical basis. The aim of this research was the study of peculiarities of motivation of young Russian football players on various age periods. 126 football players, pupils of football boarding school Football club Krasnodar of Krasnodar city, aged from 12 till 16 participated in the investigation. The results showed that young football players motivation had rather regular changes in accordance with their age. The more prominent pleasure for engaging in football (intrinsic motivation) and sensitivity to any kind of external stimulation (extrinsic motivation) were displayed by young football players aged from 12 till 14, while sportsmen aged from 13 till 15 were characterized by a certain drop of all motivational aspects and amotivation.
