The article deals with the status of the Russian-speaking population in Poland in so-called ‘Eastern Kresy’ (territories incorporated directly into the Soviet Union under the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact). The author analyses the Polish Government’s policy in relation to the national minority, as well as its alterations during the 1920-1930-s. Besides, the article describes the specific atmosphere in Kresy and the government’s response to some or other events in the region aimed at stabilisation of the truce, precarious enough as it was.
