The article actualizes the problem of the development of empathy in preschool children. The data available in science on the main tendencies in the development of empathy in preschool children are analyzed, on the basis of which a conclusion is made about the need to study it at the stage of middle preschool age. The results of the study, devoted to the study of the characteristics of empathy in children 4-5 years old, are presented, the main shortcomings in the development of this quality in children of this age are described.
