Structural and functional impairments in the thyroid have been revealed which develop in chronic endogenous intoxication. The extent of impairment is mostly related to the initial level of general nonspecific reactivity in animals. A high general nonspecific reactivity provides a rapid though short-term adaptation to intoxication, which leads to more pronounced morphofunctional changes in the thyroid. Animals with poor reactivity are more resistant to the deleterious effects.
