The paper analyzes the mechanism of operation of the Yuryuzan plant of metal products, a large industrial enterprise in the South Urals, in the second half of the 1930s through the prism of the biography of one of its directors Spiridon Zakharovich Miroshin. The study presents the biography of a typical representative of the industrial elite of that era. After a short and not entirely successful management of the said enterprise, the director was accused of counter-revolutionary activities, convicted and shot as an enemy of the people. Based on concrete factual material, the main problems and complex issues that the director of the enterprise had to face are shown. These are the attachments of raw materials, and the low discipline of workers, and other problems, for the solution of which S.Z. Miroshin had neither the proper knowledge, nor experience, nor the corresponding personal qualities. However, in the 1930s it was easier to accuse of sabotage than to understand the real problems of plant management, which slowed down the industrialization process and led to significant human losses.
