This study is devoted to identifying the nature and degree of interaction between the Russian Federation and the European Union in the fuel and energy sector under the conditions of sanctions pressure and countersanctions. The paper presents a detailed retrospective analysis of the interaction between the Russian Federation and the European Union since the 60s of the twentieth century and ending in 2022. The predominance of the Russian Federation in relation to other exporting countries in the energy sector of the European Union has led to the fact that until recently our country was the leader in the export sector of all three types of fuel. The sanctions measures taken by the European Union lead to a reduction in cooperation in the energy sector. However, it is not only Russia that bears the damage from them: The European Union has already felt a reduction in energy supplies (especially gas), and a sharp rise in prices for them even before the heating season.
