The leading cause of acute urinary retention (AUR) in men is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) diagnosed in 1050% patients with AUR. Epidemiological studies suggest a gradual increase in the incidence of BPH among males. The results of autopsies indicate that histological signs of BPH are found in approximately 25% of men aged 40-50 years, 50% of men aged 50-60 years, 65% of men aged 60-70 years, and 90% of men aged 90 years and older. Some authors reported a 10%-50% incidence of AUR in BPH patients. In men with AUR, the first priority is to quickly eliminate urinary retention and the accompanying pain syndrome. Urethral catheterization or cystostomy can be used to ensure urine evacuation and bladder drainage. Further treatment tactics for AUR/BPH includes pharmacotherapy or surgery, depending on clinical manifestations of the disease, general condition of the patient, and the presence of concomitant pathology.
