The article is dedicated to Archimandrite Gerasim (Shmalts) (1888–1969), a native of the Tula land, the successor of the missionary feat of St. Herman of Alaska. The year 2019 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Father Gerasim. His mature years were spent in monastic exploits on Elovy Island in the Kodiak Archipelago in Alaska. One of the merits of Archimandrite Gerasim is the finding of the relics of the St. Herman and his subsequent canonization in the Russian Orthodox Church.
