The article analyses an important shift in the late Paul Ricœur’s phenomenological hermeneutics. It shows how the so called «conflict of interpretations» abundantly discussed in the 1960s led Ricœur – through various conceptual amplifications and transformations – to a philosophical concept of translation. The author of the article sees translation as an endless ethical relation, as a paradigm of one’s relation to the other and at the same time maintains that treating cognition as translation (and translation as cognition) provides conceptual instruments for modernizing contemporary epistemology.
