Collection and systematization of tamga signs by archaeologies show that tamgas, such as Ashina, Yaglokar, Kyrgyz, belong to individuals or families in each ruling clan of southern Siberia and Central Asia during the 8th-10th centuries. Tamgas of the Ryurik dynasty in Medieval Russia also refer to such personal and family symbols. Heraldry explores the European tradition where the coats of arms carry only symbols of the entire family, without displaying distinctive features of each member of the clan. Tamgasign studies focus on family symbols that have signs of specific persons of all male generations.
