The materials of the First General Population Census of 1897 reflect the reality of the Russian Empire at the end of the 19th century. In this article we consider family and marriage relations shown in the census materials for the Yakutsk region. We have a unique opportunity to study the Yakut family according to the original source - the census forms that have been preserved in the National Archives of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). With a comparative description, we see quite significant changes that have occurred in the Yakut family. The socioeconomic development of the Yakut nasleg brought not only the opportunity, but also the need for the existence of a large family. One family consisted of parents and several of their children with their families. It was typical for outsiders - artisans, workers and their families to live in a family. Traditional mores such as spouses of different ages, childbearing in old age, raising other people's children also remained characteristic of the Yakut family of the period under study. When choosing a settlement, we focused on the characteristic of the population for the Yakut society of the late 19th century. We studied the population of the 1st Khatylinsky nasleg of the Boturussky ulus of the Yakutsk district.
