Widespread is the belief that Russian elegy experienced a crisis in 1820s, after which it ceased to exist as a genre. An antithesis is formulated in the article: the period was that of another ascent of Russian elegy, when its principal motives underwent a transformation under the influence of Byronic tendencies.
