The Selenga River is the major waterway of Mongolia and Western Transbaikal (Russia). The people settled on the shores of this river from the Paleolithic epoch. The first investigations of Western Transbaikal Stone Age had begun with discovering and researching situated on the Selenga River shores sites dated to the Stone Age. At the present days there are known a few tens of archeological sites in the Russian part of the Selenga River valley, but only some of them were excavated. The focus of the Western Transbaikal Palaeolithic research shifted on the branches of tributaries of the Selenga River. The article is aimed to demonstrating promising prospects of investigations in the Selenga River Valley and to introducing into scientific use a set of Paleolithic sites on its branches revealed in the course of the Russian-Mongolian expedition in 2008.
