The paper explores travel notes written by A. S. Norov, a wellknown military leader and a state figure of the mid-19th century as well as a Russian writer, a scholar and a traveler who visited Egypt and the Syro-Palestinian region. The paper also mentions emergence of the scientific method, elements of in situ examination of sites in the landscape as well as comprehensive critical analysis of contemporary scientific literature along with ancient and medieval sources. It also determines the place of A. S. Norov among other contemporary travelers who were also researchers, in particular, in the context of the magnum opus written by Edward Robinson, an American biblical scholar.
