Memories of academician L. A. Zenkevich (1889-1970), the coryphaeus of domestic biological oceanology

The academician Lev Aleksandrovich Zenkevich was one of leading zoologists, founders of school of sea biologists and organizers of biological oceanology in our country. He was the active participant of Committee on Creation of Naval Sea Institute. Since 1930 till 1970 he was managing Department of Invertebrate Zoology of the Moscow University. He was the bright lecturer. He was the initiator of White Sea Biological Station. Simultaneously with management of Department in 1948-1970 he supervised over Laboratory of Benthos at the Shirshov's Institute for Oceanology. He also was actually one of the founders of this Institute. He published a number of scientific books on fauna and biological productivity of the seas and textbooks on invertebrate zoology and animal geography. He was the initiator of acclimatization of polychaeta worm Nereis and clam Abra (Syndesmya) to Caspian Sea which became subsequently a favourite food of sturgeon. Especially, it has been much made by L.A. Zenkevich for the organization of researches of deep-water fauna of oceans. L.A. Zenkevich's activity has been highly estimated by our state and abroad.
