The article is devoted to a famous Ural historian Iakov B. Rabinovich, an expert on the history of social movements and social thought in the Urals during the second half of the 19 th century and a veteran of World War II. In June 2015, there were 95 years since the birth of Iakov Borisovich Rabinovich (1920-1998), a talented teacher and researcher who made a significant contribution to the study of the Ural social and intellectual life of the second half of the 19 th century. He worked in Perm State University for about 40 years. His meticulous research activitity that resulted in publication of more than 50 academic papers is of particular interest. As a researcher, Rabinovich was inter ested primarily in the history of revolutionary and liberal movements in the post-reform Urals. He also wrote the works on the history of peasant movement, in particular, on the uprisings of the former state peasants in Perm province in the 1870-s and the1880-s. In a number of his works, Rabinovich analyzed the socio-economic position of the mining population and the factory workers of the Urals, touching the history of the labor movement, its scope, characteristics and peculiarities. Yakov Borisovich Rabinovich was one of the first researchers who turned to the study of the history of intellectuals and intellectual life in the post-reform Urals. He thus made a significant contribution to the study of intellectual life and culture of the region.
