The article analyses the novel "Bogatyr’s cudgel" by V.V. Klimov. The subject of the research is the genetic relation of the text to the pastoral tradition. The images of the shepherd and shepherdboy based on the concept of "natural man" are regarded. Special attention is paid to the topic which dates back to the pastoral of Ancient times and Enlightenment (Longus, D. Defoe). The role of typical of the pastoral oppositions (city - village, civilization - culture) is analysed. The author emphasizes that the pastoral-idyllic context reveals new aspects of the treasure hunting motive, which plays the plot-building role.
