The study deals with the development problem of such facet of cultural policy of the Soviet state in the 1917-1930s as the establishment of printing and book publishing in the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Regulation of the printed media has always been one of the primary objectives for the government. Press provided the great impact on the population being the most powerful ideological weapon of all. The process of printing and book publishing development can be conventionally divided into several periods. The first one is connected with numerous periodicals appearing after the overthrow of the Tsar in February 1917. The second period (since 1920) is associated with the establishment of local Soviet authorities. At that time, publishing activity was under total control of the Bolshevik Party. The third period (since the late 1920s) is characterized by establishing state control over the cultural life of the society as a whole. The author concluded that for the period under review periodical press and book publishing in Bashkiria made significant progress.
