Blood transfusion: history and modernity (on the 100th anniversary of blood transfusion in Russia)

A review of the history of blood transfusion is presented. A brief description of the 4 stages of the transfusion medicine development of is given: 1) XIX century compensation for lethal blood loss 2) 19071932 supply of blood to the clinic 3) 19322000 ensuring the clinics need for blood, blood components and products 4) XXI century a guarantee of the transfusion therapy quality. The work of the blood service is an important component of the clinical, educational and scientific activities of the Pirogov Center.
