Experience of divorce as a predictor of depressive state

This article analyzes the experience of divorce as a predictor of depressive states. Depression is considered a significant mental health problem, exacerbated by modern factors: a fast-paced lifestyle, social isolation, and the crisis of the family institution. According to the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (2024), 80% of marriages end in divorce, which entails emotional, social, and financial losses, perceived as psychological trauma. Divorce is recognized as one of the most stressful events, triggering "post-divorce syndrome" with manifestations of loneliness, apathy, and depression. Theoretical approaches (psychoanalytic, cognitive, and humanistic) emphasize the multifaceted nature of depression, including low mood, loss of interest, and energy. Particular attention is paid to gender differences: women experience depression more intensely due to sociocultural factors and stigma. The stages of the divorce process (denial, anger, depression, acceptance) are described. The article emphasizes the importance of developing psychological support programs to overcome depressive states in the post-divorce period, especially for women, given their increased vulnerability and need for stress management skills.
