The personalistic conception of archpriest Georges Florovsky in the context of the ideas of “new theology”

A book by P. Gavrilyuk “Georges Florovsky and the Russian Religious Renaissance” (Kiev, 2017), which was recently translated into Russian, gives a considerable amount of new material for a critical reflection on the legacy of one of the 20th century’s most outstanding Russian theologians. Though the revealing of Fr. Georges’ links not only with a circle of religious philosophers but also with the academic school, particularly - with the authors of a movement, named by its contemporaries - “New Theology”, is beyond the scope of this monograph. There is, however, every reason to believe that it is the legacy of exactly this circle of authors in which the fundamental theses of Fr. Georges’ personalistic conception have their origins. But while establishing this fact, we actually come across another problem. As it is known, an intention of the authors of “New Theology” to use the paradigms of Modern Western philosophy, in order to create the alternatives to Western theological conceptions, should be considered to be one of the most distinguishing features of this movement...
