The paper discusses prospects for development of propulsion systems based on electric thrusters and their application in various space missions. It addresses engineering design features of each such system, as well as the potential of such systems to improve efficiency of interplanetary missions. The paper emphasizes the role of electric thruster-based propulsion systems in reducing propellant consumption and improving the reliability of spacecraft. It especially focuses on crucial tasks of today’s spaceflight, including deployment of constellations of spacecraft and microsatellites for various applications.
