Perspective varieties of phlox paniculata for greening cities and towns of Western Siberia

Flowering plant, Phlox paniculata, with different variety of beautiful and colorful blossoms, ruggedness and long flowering is widely used for landscaping. The aim is to study the biological characteristics, to give a decorative assessment of the Phlox varieties and to recommend the best ones for use in landscaping of cities and towns of Western Siberia. The work was carried out with using of common in ornamental horticulture techniques in 2014-2017 in the Botanical garden of FSBEI Omsk State agrarian University named after P.A. Stolypin that is located in the southern forest-steppe zone of Omsk region. There are the most winter-hardy varieties of Phlox paniculata Success (control), Shoriya, Red Houdin, Ruddy, and form 5 whose hardiness is 95-100 % or 5 points in Western Siberia. Growth of plants begins in the second decade of April, when the sum of effective temperatures is 15-38 оС. Flowering in June and July depends on plant variety, when the sum of effective temperatures reaches 203-371 оС. Phlox paniculate has different duration of flowering. Flowering varieties of the Scarlet sails and Red Houdin continue for 78 days, which is 10 days more than the control varieties Success. The timing of flowering varieties are divided into groups: Rondeletia - Rosy, My love; late - Success, Red Houdin, Scarlet sails, Shoriya, Gzhel and forms 5, 87, 105. Varieties of Success, Red Houdin, My love, Scarlet sails, form 87 have a resistantance to adverse weather conditions (rain, wind, drought), but form 5 is not stable. Advanced varieties of Phlox paniculata for using in gardening settlements of Western Siberia are: Success, Alyy Parus, Rosy. These have been assessed as a decoration on 90-92 point from 100-point scale.
