Prospects for the development and implementation of municipal geographic information systems within the territory of the Udmurt Republic

Geographic information systems (GIS) are automated systems designed for collecting, processing, analyzing, modeling and displaying data, as well as solving information and calculation problems using digital cartographic, analog and textual information. GIS of a new generation are aimed at managing spatial data and at territorial analysis, including municipalities. In spite of the positive experience of municipal GIS (MGIS) introduction in Russia, there are no full-fledged functioning MGIS in the Udmurt Republic. This article is devoted to a review of existing MGIS in the Udmurt Republic. The features of such systems in various towns, as well as problems solved with their usage, are considered in this article. The prospects for the development and implementation of MGIS as a part of the Russian Federation subject’s town-planning activity support information system are formulated.
