Within this article the basic problems of the Russian legislation in the area of combating animal cruelty are stated, the author made suggestions for its improvement. Also the international legal framework aimed at protecting animals from unlawful encroachments on the part of a person is studied, the jurisprudence by the example of Ozyorsk municipal court of the city Ozyorsk in Chelyabinsk region is analyzed
