First encyclopedia of Russian conservatism

Publication of an encyclopedia “Russian conservatism of the middle of the XVIIIcentury and the beginning of the XX century” edited by Doctor of Historical Sci-ences V. V. Shelohaev significantly fills a gap in the study of Russian thought. Themain content of the encyclopedia is biographical articles; also political and culturaland educational associations of conservatives are studied; the leading periodicalsof the conservative wing are presented. The article considers both positive aspectsof publication (wide range of topics and personalities, a high level of scientific train-ing, links to archives, an extensive bibliography) and its problems (some importantpersonalities missing, conceptual contradictions, questionable use of certain terms),also the most successful encyclopedia articles are singled out.
